Chris Riley on Preserving Austin’s Character

Chris Riley was born and raised in Austin, and loves the special character of our city. As a
member of our city council, he will protect what makes Austin unique, and ensure that
generations of Austinites can continue to live and thrive here.

  • Promote Affordable Housing. Chris Riley will protect and promote affordable housing,
so Austinites can afford to remain here. Chris will make sure we define clear goals for
affordability, create a coherent set of incentives, make better use of city-owned land, tap
available federal funds, and promote private-sector affordable housing efforts.

  • Improve Access to Health and Human Services. No matter what happens with the
economy, Chris Riley will prioritize access to services that those most in need depend on.
Chris will look for ways in which the city can partner with non-profit agencies and other
jurisdictions to make sure our safety nets and basic services remain intact.
  • Support Our Arts, Music, and Cultural Scenes. Our creative workforce is an integral
part of Austin’s identify, and it’s also an important part of our economy. Chris Riley will
support our arts-related enterprises not only for their cultural value, but also because
they keep Austinites working at what they love.
  • Support Public Safety. Our city’s first responsibility is the health and safety of its
citizens. Chris Riley will make sure that our police, fire fighters, and EMS have all of the
resources they need to do their job. He’ll support rank-and-file involvement in major
equipment decisions, to make sure services are provided in the most cost-effective way.
  • Preserve Austin’s History. Austin has a unique heritage that Chris Riley will work hard
to preserve and promote. As the former President of the Austin History Center
Association, and the creator of the oldaustin.org website, Chris knows the issues
impacting historic preservation across our city. Chris will work to ease the process of
creating historical districts, to bring Austin in line with other cities that have capitalized
    on their historic assets.
  • Protect Our Neighborhoods’ Character. As our city grows, Chris Riley will work to
preserve the character of our existing neighborhoods. Chris supports giving neighborhood
associations more authority in defining the scope and focus of their neighborhood
planning, so that the process affords a genuine opportunity for neighborhoods to envision
the future they want to see.
