Sierra Club Endorses Riley for Place 1

The Austin Regional Group of Sierra Club has endorsed Chris Riley for Austin City Council Place 1, in recognition of his long-standing work on environmental issues here in Austin. “Chris simply has a longer history of environmental stewardship here in Austin,” stated Karin Ascot, Sierra Club’s Political Chair, citing his record of practicing these values in his everyday life.

“This endorsement is a huge honor for me. Protecting our environment is one of my primary concerns, both as an individual and as a candidate for City Council,” stated Riley. On his Issues Page, Riley lays out detailed plans for Austin that address our city’s pressing concerns from an environmental perspective. From the creation of a Materials Recovery Facility to the expansion of our rail network, Riley will focus on creating jobs and increasing mobility for Austinites in a way that is environmentally responsible.

Riley’s record of results demonstrates an extensive history of enabling Austinites to live more sustainable, environmentally conscious lives. He co-founded Austin CarShare and the Alliance for Public Transportation to help people reduce their dependence on cars. As Chair of the Planning Commission, Riley guided the city towards more environmentally friendly development with a specific emphasis on increased pedestrian access.

Riley also served on the boards of the Austin Parks Foundation and Austin Metro Trails & Greenways, and was a member of the Water Conservation Task Force and Town Lake Waterfront Overlay Advisory Board. On an personal level, Riley’s home renovation was the first four-star residential “green” building in Austin, completed in 2003. His home also boasts its own rainwater collection tank to help reduce municipal water usage.

“One of our biggest interests is having people in City Hall who recognize what an asset the environmental community in Austin really is,” said Ascot, noting Riley’s desire to meet frequently with organizations concerned about environmental issues. “My door will always be open to anyone concerned about protecting our natural resources,” stated Riley.
