Adventures on the Campaign Trail
Every day on the campaign trail brings new adventures. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve ridden in two firetrucks, a police car, an ambulance, a garbage truck, and APD’s downtown bicycle patrol. I’ve enjoyed them all, and really appreciated spending time with the men and women serving our city. Last Wednesday morning brought another highlight: I watched as one of our single-stream recycling trucks dumped its load into a trailer, to be hauled off to San Antonio for processing. The volume and variety of discarded materials were amazing. Who knew a giant ice chest would even fit in a recycling cart?
These experiences have emphasized to me time and again that our city is full of hard-working people who help Austin live up to our values and expectations. In that same spirit, I’m looking forward to continuing my own efforts to make our city more sustainable and accessible, and increasing the engagement of our citizens.
As these adventures on the campaign trail continue, I’ll be focusing on how we can tap into the enthusiasm of Austinites to make a difference here in our city. Meanwhile, if you’d like to keep up with regular updates from my travels around Austin, check out my Twitter feed, and see where I’ll end up next.
